What Is Tufting? A Guide to the Rug-Making Technique
Tufting (rug tufting) is a hands-on technique for making rugs with a tufting gun. We explain how it works, where it came from and why it's taking over the craft world.

Tufting — more precisely rug tufting — is a technique for making rugs by punching loops of yarn into a stretched cloth using a special tufting gun. The result is a dense, soft pile that becomes rugs, wall hangings and decorations in any design, from abstract patterns to a logo or a portrait of a beloved pet.
Where does tufting come from?
The technique itself is old and has been used in the carpet industry for decades. What's new is its craft revival: thanks to affordable tufting guns and materials, anyone can now make their own rugs at home or at a workshop. In recent years tufting has exploded on social media, where videos of rugs coming to life rack up millions of views.
How is a tufted rug made?
The process is simpler than it looks, though it takes practice. In short:
- The design is transferred onto primary tufting cloth stretched on a frame.
- Using the tufting gun, you fill outlines and areas with yarn, colour by colour.
- The back is sealed with glue so the loops stay put.
- A backing fabric is attached, edges are trimmed and the pile is sheared to even out the surface.
Is tufting hard?
You can learn the basics in a few hours — which is exactly why it works so well as a workshop. You guide the gun across the cloth with a steady, calm motion, and the biggest thrill is the moment your pattern emerges from a tangle of yarn. Durability and finish improve with experience, but you can make your first rug in your very first session.
Tufting as a hobby and a gift
For many people tufting starts with a single workshop and turns into a full-blown hobby. It also makes a great gift: instead of yet another object, you give someone an experience and a handmade rug that lasts for years.
